Publishing African stories in indigenous languages

It is important that children have access to books that are beautifully illustrated, containing stories that they can relate to! This forms part of Biblionef’s key beliefs which is why we are so excited about this project!

Thanks to our Funders; the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund and the National Arts Council, we have commissioned the translation and publishing of Gcina Mhlophe’s ‘Stories of Africa’ (in 10 languages) and ‘Our Story Magic’ in (9 languages)! Both books in English were purchased as part of the project.

Biblionef has planned a series of launches in different areas of the country to highlight the different languages. We kick started this off in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal at the Umtentweni Library on the 5th March 2015. The author of the books and well-known South African storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe, kept the audience captivated by telling stories from the books. Later this year we will also be launching them at the Jozi Festival, so be sure not to miss it!

This project has made it possible for us to donate even more home language storybooks to the children of South Africa and we are extremely delighted by this!
