In a heartwarming initiative to ignite a love for reading and learning, Biblionef South Africa, in partnership with Nelson Mandela University, has made a remarkable impact in Motherwell, Gqeberha. This transformative project, funded by the Yamada Apiculture Centre, provided 2683 new storybooks to eight primary and five high schools, enriching classrooms and libraries with essential resources.
Biblionef’s focus was not only on delivering books but also on empowering teachers through interactive workshops and in-class mentoring sessions. These workshops, designed to align with the CAPS curriculum, equipped foundation phase teachers with creative tools and methodologies to enhance their reading and writing lessons. The impact has been overwhelmingly positive, as teachers have embraced new techniques and witnessed firsthand the power of storytelling in engaging young minds.
The teachers’ response to the project has been particularly inspiring. One of the highlights was the “Tree of Life” activity during the closing ceremony, where educators reflected on their journey throughout the programme. Many expressed pride in their growth, both professionally and personally, as they shared stories of how the donated books transformed their classrooms into vibrant spaces of learning. Reading corners have sprung up in many schools, and learners are showing more enthusiasm than ever before.
Grade 1 teachers were especially excited about the new tools they received, noting noticeable improvements in their learners’ reading comprehension and vocabulary. “I feel empowered to make reading fun for my students,” shared one teacher, echoing the sentiments of her colleagues. Grade 2 and 3 teachers also praised the interactive nature of the workshops, which helped them create more engaging lessons and foster collaboration among staff.
Despite the challenges faced, such as large class sizes and the need for more resources, teachers remained committed to using the new methodologies. Their enthusiasm and creativity have inspired a ripple effect among learners, many of whom are now more eager to participate in reading and writing activities.
As Biblionef looks toward the future, the success of this project reaffirms the importance of literacy in building brighter futures. The feedback from teachers and learners alike has been a testament to the lasting impact that access to quality reading materials and innovative teaching practices can have. Biblionef is eager to continue supporting these schools and expanding the reach of this initiative, ensuring that the gift of reading continues to inspire the next generation.
Together, we are creating a legacy of literacy, one book and one classroom at a time.
