Thanks to our donor, My School, we supported 10 Primary Schools with quality storybooks in their learners’ home language and English. We also planned to carry out two in-depth workshops with selected Foundation Phase teachers from the schools and provide them with mentoring and coaching in the classroom.

The schools selected for this project are from both rural and township areas within the uMgungundlovu District of KwaZulu-Natal. After liaising with the schools on their specific book needs, our Project Manager selected and sourced 1 520 books for the schools in isiZulu and English. We also ensured that the books were covered in book plastic to extend their shelf life.

Despite Covid-19, our Project Manager travelled to Pietermaritzburg between the 10^th and 19^th of May 2021 to conduct two workshops with the Foundation Phase teachers. She also carried out in-class mentoring sessions with the teachers to offer support on implementing the new methodologies in the classroom with their learners. Strict Covid-19 protocols were followed to ensure the safety of our staff and the teachers.

We are planning to carry out the next set of workshops and in-class mentoring sessions during the third term, pending the stabilization of the third wave. Until then, we are supporting the foundation phase teachers via WhatsApp. Thank you once again to our donor for allowing us to make this project a reality!
