Bookshop There are three aspects that make Biblionef's work with books unique: Biblionef donates childrens' books in all eleven official languages of South Africa. Research has shown that children who learn basic reading and writing skills in their mother tongue perform better at school. These children have a great advantage in grasping concepts even when taught in another language. Therefore, South African Minister of Education, Mrs. Pandor, promotes teaching children in their own language during the first six years of education. Biblionef donates only new children’s books. This second characteristic of Biblionef's books often seems to confuse people. Indeed, some second hand books are in a good condition and would be suitable for children in South Africa. However, for us there are some key reasons why focusing on new books. Firstly, new books last longer than others, and this is especially true for books used by children. Secondly, schools often need many copies per title - and it is quite difficult to find thirty used books of one title in a good condition. Last but not least, new and colourful books help to create a love for reading, especially for children living in disadvantaged communities. Giving them new books strengthens their self-esteem and feeling of self-worth. Biblionef focuses on African stories and illustrations that children can easily relate to. Because of the African content, students associate more easily with the characters, and the focus on African culture or heritage strengthens their pride. Furthermore, it stimulates local authors and illustrators to create new material and thus influences the local publishing industry.
